Eleven in the morning and the pavement is already hot. He is panting before you reach the end of the road, and you are doing the maths on how far you can still take him.
This is a cooling vest. You soak it, wring it out, and put it on him. As the water evaporates it pulls heat off his back and chest. That is the whole mechanism.
Read this first — how it actually works
It cools by evaporation. Soak it in cold water, wring out the excess until it is damp rather than dripping, and fasten it on. It works while it is damp and stops working when it dries out. On a hot day that is somewhere between thirty and ninety minutes, less in dry wind, and then it needs re-wetting.
A dry vest is just a layer of fabric. If you put it on dry it does nothing.
It is also not a licence to walk a dog in the middle of the day. It buys you some margin on a warm morning or an early evening. On a genuinely hot afternoon the answer is still shade, water, and going out later. If your dog is already distressed — heavy panting, bright red gums, stumbling — this is not the tool. That is a vet, now.
What it actually is
- Three-layer construction with a breathable mesh outer, so air moves through it instead of sitting against the coat
- Quick-release buckles at the neck and belly — adjustable, and off in a second if you need it off
- Covers the back and shoulders, which is where the sun lands on a walk
- Five sizes, S to 2XL — small, medium and large dogs
- 100% polyester. Light, and it dries fast, which is the trade-off for needing re-wetting
Sizing
Measure, do not guess. Chest girth is the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Neck girth is where a collar sits. Back length is the base of the neck to the base of the tail.
Fit to the chest measurement first — it is the one that decides whether this works. If your dog falls between two sizes, take the larger one.

Allow 1 – 3 cm either way for measuring by hand. Both straps adjust, so there is some give — but the vest should sit flat against him with room for two fingers under each strap. If it is tight enough to compress his chest, it is too small.
Care
Rinse after use, especially after the beach — salt and sand sit in the mesh and it will start to smell. Cold wash, air dry, no tumble dryer. Do not iron it; the mesh will melt.
